I’ve read conflicting information on different websites. And Microsoft’s website is not any clearer.
If I buy a Window 7 Home Premium Upgrade and perform a clean install, will this work coming from Windows XP Pro?
I’ve heard things like. Previous Pro versions can only be upgraded to Windows Pro, likewise, Home -> Home Premium and Ultimate -> Ultimate. Very confusing stuff.
So with upgrade disc. I can perform a clean install. From any version of XP to any version of Windows 7?

First make sure your computer can handle Windows 7 with this:
If it passes, all I’ve ever heard is you can’t upgrade from Windows XP to 7. It apparently has to be a clean install, meaning you’re going to have to save all your important files onto an external drive, erase everything on your hard drive and install Windows 7, regardless of version. This might help you:

There is no direct upgrade from XP to Windows 7 of any form. When you install it will force you to do a new install. All of your existing files will be left in a directory called windows.old.
Best you can do is to use easy file transfer to capture all of your settings, desktop icons, etc. and then transfer them to Windows 7 when you complete the install. This site has a good description on what to do.
Easy file transfer will reduce some of your work.
Note: you will have to reinstall any programs or games that you are currently running in Windows 7.
