I’m confused about the whole “clean install” terminology. Can I do a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade box? Or do I need to buy the whole version to upgrade my current Windows Vista Ultimate?

If you have the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium it means that you have to already have Vista installed on that machine to use it. A clean install means that you reformat the hard drive (so there is no operating system on it) and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 on your machine. You can not do a fresh install from an “upgrade” copy of Windows 7. Hope this helps.

You cannot go Vista Ultimate->Windows 7 HP, it has to go to ultimate. I say just buy a fresh OEM copy of Vista, with a free upgrade coupon will be cheaper. For the terminology:
Clean install is for a complete new install, you reformatted or partition and is willing to install a copy of Windows
You cannot do a clean install with an upgrade copy.
When you install Windows 7, it will give you two options, clean install or upgrade.
