The Ultimate upgrade is $100 more than the Home Premium one. It’s $120 more than the full version.

It’s really just a way for consumers to get their hands on all the features of Enterprise, which isn’t sold at retail and is usually sold in volume licenses to businesses.

The main additional features of Ultimate are BitLocker drive encryption, and the ability to use language packs.

Those features would mainly be useful to those in business who are traveling a lot and need to keep their hard drive secure and encrypted. The language packs could also be useful to multiple users sharing a laptop and speaking different languages, for example. Anyone who really truly needs those features would probably be in a situation where the premium is easily worth it — some small businesses for example, who also wouldn’t normally be going for Enterprise.

And I suppose the “Ultimate” edition also potentially appeals to some consumers who simply have an ego to satisfy and are willing to pay a premium to satisfy it, even if they don’t use the additional features. If someone would like to buy an expensive version of Windows 7 just so they can have it say “Ultimate” during startup, Microsoft lets them do it.
