Vista was just a “stop gap” (like Windows ME was), and never intended to be a permanent solution. It’s like throwing the dog a bone, because so many were complaining about limitations in XP, so they got it out really quickly while they continued to build Windows 7.

Naturally, Microsoft will tell you that Windows 7 will be the better of the two, once it is fully available to the public some time next year.

In other words, Windows 7 is the upgraded version of Vista.

In most my experience Windows 7 is hands down the better of the two OS. Other than the support for more than 3GB of RAM you will notice little performance difference between 64 bit and 32 bit systems.

Windows 7 should generally be better and faster than Vista.

Version (Ultimate, Professional, etc.) is irrelevant though.

Of course whatever services you have active on either one can greatly determine how slow, fast, or stable it is.

Windows 7 is more efficient than Vista, plus IMHO I like the UI better.
