Why live in the past?
I've noticed lots of people hating Windows Vista, and go to Linux or XP because they don't know how to download graphics drivers or have an ancient computer system.
Do you know Vista has 5,000 extra tools and a way better, and classy user interface, it's made for entertainment, programming, browsing, publishing, and all other digital lifestyles.
Windows 7 has an even better user interface.
The question is, has any Linux geek and XP eccentric actually tried Vista? XP was nice in its day, but Vista's graphics blow it away, from the user's side, Vista is more faster (uses less RAM), but is heavier on the GPU, that means old GPUs won't cope with the graphics load required. The latest computers come with better GPUs and a system that is compatible with Vista's version-based variables.

Windows 7 should be released by June the 30th 2009, and the Beta should be available within the next 1-2 month(s).

Windows 7 looks very much like Vista with an awesome, futuristic task bar, about 1.75 times the height of Vista's. It is icon and/or group based.

At the moment we have just left the milestones, currently in MileStone 3 the development team is developing the kernel and libraries, and a little bit of the GUI, but they are going to replace Aero with a theme called 'Scenic', the DWM graphics have not changed yet, so we are yet to await this proposal.

.NET Technologies are to be improved, version 4 will not support XP as much because it targets the MinWin NT 6.1 kernel.
Once 7 is out, XP will be as old to Windows 7, as MS DOS is to XP.
That means XP is completely off the drawing board, an ancient technology, a predecessor.
Windows 7 has technologies to work on XP computers with Vista graphics, it won't be all that good but a good improvement for new, smaller PCs.

Windows 7 is 100% compatibile with Vista, in fact it is more compatible with Vista than Vista is itself.
Windows 7 has powerful backwards compatibility technologies.

Over a million lines of code have been taken out of the kernel, this will allow Vista, aka Windows 7 to use less memory than both XP and Vista does together.
Windows 7's kernel will run nearly as fast as Linux without a GUI, but with over 600,000 libraries of Win32 and WOW64 for almost unlimited horsepower for any GUI running on top.
Windows 7's GUI uses a bit more memory than Vista's does, because of the improved graphics, but with the less memory used by the kernel pages, the GUI and the kernel combined will still use less memory than Vista, and XP.
Which is quite amazing really.

Buy yourself a new laptop now, Windows 7 is compatible with the latest computers, but newer technologies may be delivered that only Windows 7 Compatible laptops can bare and run. But those technologies are yet to be introduced, we do not know yet, it depends what the development teams come up with.
The Vista-Capable laptops of today work well between £300 to £5,000 (the higher the price, normally means the better the experience, graphics and performance).

Err, I've also heard lot's of people here say 'it's just Vista with a few more features', well what's Vista to XP, 'it's just XP with a few more features', well what's 2000 to XP, 'it's just 2000 with a few more features', you could go on and on!

Thanks.

I remember when they said Vista would be released in 2003 or 2004. Don't hold your breath. Besides, Windows 7 will just be Vista with some additional features.

windows 7 will be fully backwards compatible with vista. you will be able to upgrade from vista to 7 with no problems as microsoft plans for the windows 7 requirements to be the same as or very close to vistas requirements, since MS is building it off the vista kernel.

also MS has already started doing driver support testing to make sure that 7 doesn't have the problems that vista did at launch.

Windows 7 will most likely just be a scaled down version of Vista.

I don't expect much.

But if you can wait a year for a new computer, do it. With Intel's new 32nm processor announcement, there will be a whole new chipset out by then that will make the modern Quad Cores look like pocket calculators!

They said Vista was going to be good before it was released also. So, Windows 7 is also a gamble at best.

Just get Windows XP Pro or Windows XP Pro x64.
