windows 7 vs vista

I just asked a question comparing XP with Vista and the feedback I got wasn’t that bad for Vista. But now, I also have the option of installing windows 7 on my laptop. It has 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. I want to make sure that it is ok to install W7 on my system. Will it slow it down? Should I just install Vista Home Premium? Or should I just stick with my current WinXP Home? The programs that I normally use are lightweight. I just need it for internet, and a few more small open source programs. Please give detailed answers!

Windows 7 runs A LOT better than Windows Vista. But wait for it to come out completely instead of relying on a Release Candidate as your main OS.

XP is faster and more compatible.

Vista and Vista 7 introduce more anti-features (http://www.fsf.org/bulletin/2007/fall/antifeatures/ ) than features.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista have the same hardware requirements. So if your computer is strong enough for Vista, it’s strong enough for 7 too.

If your computer can take it (which 1GB of RAM is plenty; I’ve gotten Vista to run well on half as much), I definitely recommend upgrading to Vista or 7. But I won’t go into that too much, because as you stated, you have already been told the differences.

This is of course assuming you are going to be using the final release of Windows 7, not the RC (release canditate) version you can download (legally) for free off the Internet, as it is unstable and shouldn’t be used on your primary computer.

I’ve been seeing some false information below. So I want to note to you that Vista actually takes up 8GB. And it is not full of glitches, I have used it for years and I’ve never seen a BSoD (blue screen of death), even though I have on many XP computers (even though I rarely use them).

The UAC (user account control) improves Vista’s security greatly and if you find it too repetitive, you can turn it off.

Vista is not in beta, Vista has had a beta version, but now it is in final release and it even has two service packs (which make it far from beta). And service packs are free by the way.

You should really go with Windows 7. Windows Vista has proven to be laggier and slower than Windows 7.’

Another thing to note is that Windows Vista is taking up a lot more space on your hard drive as compared to Windows 7. Vista takes 25GB (I think), with XP at 8.

I guess XP would be best. I personally use Windows Vista, but I prefer Windows XP 10fold.

Well I never use Windows 7 so I’m not sure about it but i think it’s not that good either. New windows = more softwares + upgrade so i think it’ll better but slower too. your system is a bit slow even for Vista. I think you should stick with XP. But if you want to use vista or 7 then i think you should upgrade RAM to 2GB and a bit more space for hard drive if you want it more faster.

I would just keep XP on there, for the simple reason you only have 1gb of RAM. For gods sake don’t install Vista on there unless you want a slow pc. If you had more RAM it wouldn’t be so bad. Windows 7 requires less resources and memory than Vista. I have been running the RC1 for a few months now and pound for pound its faster than XP.

XP taking up 8gb…LOL!! and Vista 25gb…double LOL!!! On a clean install with Windows XP it will take up about 2gb. With a clean install of Vista it will take up 16gb. A clean install of Windows 7 RC1 takes up 10gb.

You should run Windows 7, I’m running it right now and have had little to no problems. With Vista Ultimate it would eventually stop loading internet etc. so I switched to 7 Ultimate, its faster on startup by alot etc. I haven’t messed with XP on my new machine but the interface is more noob friendly I guess. But theres the option to dual/tri-boot them, if you can’t decide.

Windows vista and windows 7 both are good for 1gb ram.But windows 7 is beta version.

It’s going to be a choice between XP & Vista. Forget Windows 7 for now… the trial downloads and what-not are NOT recommended for use on your primary laptop or PC.

  • Shandy L 7November2009

Window 7 RC would be the way to go.

    Myles?

Vista = beta version. ( why ? all those bugs and exploits)

Window 7 = final version of Vista

they Vista & Win 7 is basically same OS expect the fact that one is “improved” another is still in “beta”

windows 7 is very VERY user friendly, there have been some good changes, 1gb of ram is enough to run it properly, and i think you will like 7, and if you dont just throw xp back on there. the only version of vista i like is called eternity, but if not for 7 i would still be using xp.

i like vista but xp is fine when it’s tweaked.i use both and thinking about 7 all the time.might put it on one of my computers in a day or two. haven’t had time but it is a good OS. your computer will support 7 but you need to read this first. then if you want you can download from same site
have xp on other computers and vista is faster. also vista doesn’t use 25gb 6-8gb tops and you can clean that up.also have linux and it’s fast but it’s not as great as everyone says. it does work real good on old PC’s
