I work at a major university (35,000 students and around 10,000 faculty/staff) and we're switching to Vista. My department hasn't yet because we have a lot of outdated hardware, but we've tested it and all of our apps, including in-house apps, run fine. Those of us in tech support switched last summer and have had no problems. We're planning to start installing Vista for volunteers this spring and put it on all new PCs this summer. Windows 7 isn't due out until 2010 or later, and Vista has some security features that we really like. When 2010 or 2011 rolls around we'll probably hav a mixture of XP, Vista and Windows 7. We had a guy who went Mac crazy, so we now have about 30 Macs, but they've been a horrible failure due to lack of support from Apple. I've been pushing Linux but we run lots of custom VB apps (which I don't want to have to rewrite) and small apps with no Linux equivalents so it's really not practical. It depends. Not only that, a growing number of companies and individuals are switching away from Microsoft altogether and choosing a Linux-based operating system instead.
