buy windows 7

I don’t mind the hassle of formatting everything and doing a clean install of Windows 7, but is there any real advantage to waiting to buy a machine with Windows 7 preinstalled? (Are the PCs sold now really built to support Windows 7 100%?)

Thanks!

PC vendors never lie, just look at all the Vista ready PCs and how they worked fine on the release date.

OK, cheap shots aside, Microsoft Windows 7 is expected to be less hardware demanding as Windows Vista is. I’d still recommend going with a higher end system (at least dual core and 3 GB of RAM) though.

I would wait if you can. New Vista’s arent bad and you do get a coupon to BUY Windows 7 at a discount price. Thats good BUT there is no official word on what that price will be! If it were only 10 bucks off the retail thats no bargan! Win.7 is suppose to be a lot “trimer” than Vista so I would suppect anything you can buy today that would take Vista would take Win.7 I’m sticking with my XP Pro till all the smoke clears!

There’s not a huge hardware leap required to run Windows 7. In fact, anything that can handle Vista should be able to handle Windows 7 even better. It’s not like XP to Vista where there was a radical change, or graphics processing made a huge difference, etc.

If there’s an advantage in waiting, it’s simply that hardware might become more affordable in a couple months for what you get. (On the other hand, Intel coming out with lower-end i5 chips actually looks to be moving the i7 up in price over time right now. Solid state drives are dropping in price though.)

Anyway, it’s a bit of a toss up in the back to school period right now. Many places might have back to school sales, but you also have more people shopping for things. There could be a good number of people waiting for the new OS to come pre-installed though.

If you can handle the clean install yourself and think you find a good deal, I’d personally lean towards finding something now.

Yes, the machines sold now can handle Windows 7 fine if they can handle Vista. And the upgrades if eligible are indeed “free” — there’s not a question about the price. Some will simply be charging $9.99 for shipping and handling, too.

The PCs out now will be very similar to the ones out in a couple of months. There will be no changes in hardware that will render a computer unable to run Windows 7 if it is already capable of running Windows Vista.

You could buy a Windows Vista computer now as my cousin has done the same yesterday which comes with a free Windows 7 upgrade. But the truth with Windows 7 is that it’s less demanding on resources than ANY other Windows operating system. This means you could run Windows 7 perfectly on a 512mb ram computer, unlike Windows Vista needs atleast 1gb to run slowly..

Read this, it shows that Windows 7 can run on just about anything!

You’re probly better off getting a current Windows Vista computer with like 2gb ram which is perfect to run Vista then in 2 months upgrade to Windows 7 where you’ll have more than enough ram to run 7 too. When Windows 7 is released i’m sure the computers will cost more to purchase with Windows 7 pre-built in!

You should save your self a bit of cash if you read what I put above ;)

Also visit there is ALOT of discussions of Windows 7 on there.

If you’re looking for a good laptop with good specifications either Staples or PCWorld should be good for you.
